I am a network security engineer with a primary focus on the disciplines of network security monitoring, vulnerability management and access control. I have spent most of the last ten+ years working with network IDP (intrusion detection / prevention) technology, as it aligns well with my personal interests in network forensics and UNIX system abuse. As a keen advocate of Open Source technology and design principles I try to maintain an unbiased approach to security where obscurity isn’t a viable option however attractive it sounds at the time.
The Blog title of “An alchemists view from the bar” grew out of the term “Network Security Alchemy” that I dreamt up one evening. I think it matches what I do, or at least try to achieve on a daily basis. It’s a great challenge to bring together business needs and the mitigation of bleeding edge threats, its one that I enjoy and believe generally succeed in accomplishing.
Network security risk must be mitigated, not just accepted
